Alberto Vargas - Smoke Dreams Lithograph - Signed and Numbered Art 1979 - I 101/500
Alberto Vargas, born Joaquín Alberto Vargas y Chávez in 1896 in Arequipa, Peru, was a distinguished artist celebrated for his masterful depictions of the female form. His illustrious career spanned several decades, during which he collaborated with prominent publications and made significant contributions to popular culture, solidifying his legacy as a preeminent pin-up artist.
This piece is numbered I 101/500. Featuring one of the starlets of the silent film era relaxing with a cigarette, the overall size of the print is 27 x 21 inches with an image size of 21 x 16.5 inches. There is some very minor edge wear, but will not infringe on the art space when properly matted. A small scuff is visible in the left margin, as shown in the photo.
About the Smoke Dreams Vargas Lithograph Art
In 1927, Vargas created a captivating watercolor titled "Smoke Dreams," featuring a Ziegfeld and silent film girl enjoying a private moment as she smokes a cigarette in her dressing room. Completely unselfconscious, this portrayal is unusual for Vargas; while the pose is informal, he has created an image that, ironically, conveys both glamour and simple elegance. She epitomizes the attitude and spirit of the Roaring Twenties.
In the late 1970s, Vargas authorized the reproduction of this artwork in a limited edition lithograph series, reflecting the enduring appeal of his creations.
This piece not only exemplifies Vargas's exceptional skill in capturing feminine beauty but also serves as a homage to the timeless allure of the Ziegfeld Follies performers. The combination of Vargas's artistry and the historical significance of the subject renders this lithograph a treasured addition for collectors and admirers of classic pin-up art.
